About this coffee

Arbuckles' Ariosa (pronounced "AIR-ee-OH-sa") is a medium roast Central American blend, rich in flavor, with balanced acidity, a faint note of smokiness and a subtle chocolate finish.

Every one-pound bag comes with our traditional peppermint stick, made from organic beet juice with no corn syrup. It's our top seller for good reason: the original coffee that won the West.

Brewing & storage

Ratio: start with two heaping tablespoons for every 16oz of water, then adjust to taste. French press brings out the most from any blend.

Grind: whole bean stays freshest when you grind right before you brew. Pick a grind above and we grind it right before it ships.

Storage: keep it airtight at room temperature, like in a mason jar. For longer storage the freezer keeps beans or grounds fresh for up to six months. Remove the peppermint stick before freezing.

Shipping & returns

Orders placed before 12:00pm PST ship the same day, Monday to Friday, by USPS or FedEx with tracking.

We stand behind our coffees with a 60-day satisfaction guarantee. If you're not 100% satisfied, we'll exchange or refund your order, whichever you prefer.

The legend

Until the close of the Civil War, coffee was sold green and roasted at home over a fire. In 1865 John Arbuckle and his brother Charles patented a process for roasting and coating beans to seal in flavor and aroma, sold in airtight one-pound packages under the name Arbuckles' Ariosa. Those one-pound bags are what made it available to everyone.

It became so dominant in the West that many cowboys didn't know there was any other brand. Each package held a stick of peppermint candy, and when the chuck wagon cook called "Who wants the candy?", the toughest cowboys on the trail vied to grind the next day's beans.

Why it's worth it

Why Arbuckle's costs a little more

A full pound, a roast that skips the industry shortcuts, and beans we buy from smaller farms with higher standards.

  • 16 oz

    A full pound, every bag

Most specialty roasters sell 12oz bags or smaller. Arbuckle's still packs a full 16oz pound.

  • Dry roast

    No water added

Many roasters spray beans with water to cool them fast and add weight. We don't, so you get more coffee per pound and it stays fresh longer.

  • Specialty

    Graded beans, smaller farms

We only buy specialty grade coffee from farms with higher standards for harvesting and processing.

  • Same day

    Roasted fresh, shipped fast

Roasted fresh daily in Tucson. Orders placed before 12pm PST ship the same day, Monday to Friday.

Questions

Good to know before you brew

Talk to a real person

Our customer service runs 24 hours, and you always talk to a live agent.

Whole bean or ground?

Whole bean stays freshest if you grind right before you brew. If you'd rather we grind it, pick a grind above and we grind it right before it ships: espresso (very fine), autodrip (medium, the most common), French press (coarse), percolator or campfire (very coarse).

How much coffee should I use?

Start with two heaping tablespoons for every 16oz of water and adjust from there. A finer grind extracts more, a coarser grind less.

How long does it stay fresh?

Ideally enjoy it within 30 days. Stored airtight at room temperature, like in a mason jar, it keeps up to 90 days. In the freezer, beans or grounds stay fresh for up to six months. Remove the peppermint stick before freezing.

How does the subscription work?

Choose Subscribe & save above, pick your grind and how often it ships (every 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks), and we roast and ship on your schedule. You get 10% off every delivery and subscriber orders go to the front of the line.

Can I skip, pause or cancel?

Yes. Log in to your account anytime to change your delivery frequency, grind, coffees or quantities, or to put your subscription on hold. To cancel, use the Help button on our site or call 1-800-533-8278.

When will my order ship?

Orders placed before 12:00pm PST ship the same day, Monday to Friday, by USPS or FedEx with tracking.

What if I don't love it?

Every order is backed by our 60-day satisfaction guarantee. If you're not 100% satisfied, we'll exchange or refund it, whichever you prefer.
